Sylvania Community Orchestra

The Sylvania Community Orchestra is a volunteer group of musicians that provides quality music for this community.  The orchestra performs community concerts throughout the year.  These concerts are free and open to the public.  They are performed in various community venues and are typically held on Sunday afternoons.

The orchestra strives to involve local musicians and performing groups in their concerts.  Northview and Southview high school students continue to be a concert highlight which demonstrates the breadth of talent within the Sylvania community.

Interested area musicians are invited to join our group.  This is a great opportunity to dust off your instrument, support the community and have fun all at the same time.  High school students are welcome with a teacher’s recommendation.  Call SCAC for more information.

Theater For Kids
Creative theater for children in Sylvania is alive!  SCAC sponsors beginner drama and advanced classes for grades 4-8 each spring.  A Summer Theater Workshop at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes College culminates in a "big stage" performance.

Opera on Wheels
SCAC is proud to co-sponsor this unique experience to every elementary school in Sylvania. The Toledo Opera's young resident artists sing and act in a children's opera that is full of wonderful arias and antics. It is truly a multi-media experience, combining music, dance and drama with the visual elements of scenery and costumes. Seeing the opera "live" is a first-time experience for many students.

Arts Education
Education in the arts is a primary focus of the Arts Commission.  SCAC works closely with the area schools and local non-profits to sponsor programs that serve the needs of the community, especially the children.

A district-wide exhibit is held annually featuring the artwork of students from all of the Sylvania public and private schools.  The exhibit welcomes more than 600 visitors and draws wide praise for the quality of work created by the K through 12 students.

Through a partnership with Olander Park, SCAC provides an art teacher at the park for after-school art classes.  These classes, designed for younger children, are held once a week throughout the school year and are frequently attended by 25 students per class.

The Commission also provides a weekly art teacher for the Sylvania Community Services summer child care program.  These weekly art classes introduce the children to a wide variety of the arts from mural making to visiting the local glass blower.

Public Art
The Sylvania Arts Commission considers public art a necessity to our community.  It adds to the overall appeal, attractiveness and culture of our area.  Public art is a reflection of the values and lifestyles of the people who live in the city and township of Sylvania.

SCAC is the administrator and caretaker of a growing collection of public art in our area.  Keep your eyes open for new pieces as we add beauty to the region!  A directory of the items in the public art collection is available by contacting SCAC.
