Project Intent

The Sylvania Community Arts Commission (SCAC) is seeking artist submissions to transform six electric and utility boxes throughout downtown Sylvania and the Red Bird Arts District into beautiful vinyl wrapped displays of colorful and inspiring work by local and regional artists.  

Artwork & Submission Information:

The SCAC will accept applications for this call for art through June 23, 2017. Applications should be of complete, partial or modified images of already-created works or works created specifically for this public art project. Modified work must be from the artist’s own original work. Installed works will be located in highly visible areas and therefore must be appropriate to be viewed by individuals of all ages.  The committee will accept up to 3 artwork submissions per artist, with one image file for each work of art. Submissions should be of 2-dimensional works, and artists should keep in mind the shape of the utility boxes and how their work will look on a 3-dimensional surface. The art will wrap around the boxes, sizes and shapes of which do vary. The design must be submitted as a JPEG and accompanied by a $5 entry fee for one design or a $10 entry fee for up to 3 designs. Application Media/Fee Information:

Artists must submit the following:

• Up to three different artworks for consideration (one image file per artwork)

• Submissions must include a relatively high resolution (1-5MB) digital image of the proposed artwork.

• The high-resolution images must be submitted as a JPEG file.

• The file name must include the artist or organization name in the title, and a number for each different piece submitted. o For example: JenArcher1.jpg, JenArcher2.jpg

• An artist/org statement and/or description of (each) work o A list of collaborators and bios should be included if applicable.

• The size and title of (each) work. All entries must be submitted via this link.

• There is a $5 fee to submit one artwork, or $10 for up to 3.

Artist Recognition:

• Artists selected by the committee will be prominently mentioned in all media releases, related web sites and any printed materials associated with the project.

• Artist name will be included on the vinyl wrap.

• Artist’s artwork will be digitally reproduced and installed as a vinyl wrap on one of the utility boxes throughout downtown Sylvania for a period of up to 3 years.

Media Specifics:

Art Submitted for Consideration – Minimum: 1, Maximum: 3 Image Files – must be relatively high resolution (1-5MB) digital image of the proposed artworks Selection & Installation The SCAC Public Art Committee will review all artist submissions and select a winner in early August of 2017. The winning artists will be notified as soon as possible. The SCAC plans to have the installations done in early fall (weather allowing). A public unveiling and dedication event will be scheduled once the installation date is confirmed. If selected, artists must submit a high resolution professional quality (at least 150 dpi at full scale) version of their original submission in a proportion that is comparable to the selected traffic box size. The image file should include some bleed and overlap so that the work can be adjusted as needed. Artists are not responsible for the installation of the final art on the boxes. The SCAC will contract a vendor who will take the high resolution professional quality image submitted by the artist and print it onto vinyl that will be applied to the box. Please note that box sizes vary and by submitting works, artists allow the SCAC to alter/crop works as needed. Selected works will be licensed from the artist to Sylvania Community Arts Commission and the City of Sylvania for use on the electric and utility boxes in perpetuity and any marketing or publications.
